and on YOUR first lesson did you get taught on lead rein (someone hold a rope & take you round) or know anyone that did?

I’d think someone sporting zebra striped half chaps has a good sense of humour, or is a junior.. If anybody judges you harshly because of them, I’d call ‘em an old fuddy duddy.
Having said that, some instructors might protest and demand you buy traditional colored half chaps. The hunter/ eq world is particularly stuck on traditionalism. If you like the instructor, then the decision is yours to keep lessoning w/them and buy different, or swap out instrucotrs.
As for the lunge line: YES. I started that way some 30-odd years ago, and start all my kids that way when I teach. Also, good instructors will put highly experienced riders on the lunge line so they can improve their seat. It’s a great way to gain insight into controlof the horse thru’ your weight and legs only.
