Open-sided stirrups?
I live near the showgrounds for the National Horse Show and Winter Equestrian Festival so I try to go whenever I can to watch. I’ve been seeing several of the grand prix riders using a new kind of stirrups, they’re open sided, basically like a peacock iron but without the rubber band.
Obviously the reason behind this design makes a lot of sense, it’d be practically impossible for your foot to get caught in the event of a fall. Pretty smart. But it makes me curious… it seems like it would be really easy to loose your stirrup without that outer wall, and I’d think it would be harder to get it back once you lost it.
So I’m just wondering, have any of you ever ridden in these kind of stirrups, and if so, do you find them more difficult to ride in?

I’ve ridden in them. The New Jersey rep for the company came to our barn and did a demo and let us try them so we would buy them. They’re defiantly something to get used to, but they are great for forcing your leg to stay still but you shouldn’t use them to post anyway. After a few laps around the ring you barely notice that there is a change. It’s like the jointed chain stirrups. They move a little funny and wiggle a little but they’re fine after you get used to it. As far as losing your stirrup, I don’t know. I didn’t lose mine. But i would imagine it would be odd trying to find it. But again, you get used to it very fast and they are comfortable.
