How many years of horse riding does it take to be able to jump?
i am going to start to ride but i dont know how many years it will take to start jumping as i just love the thought of jumping!
does anyone know?
It depends on the rider! I’ve been riding since I was very little and I actually have no idea how long it took for me to learn. At some point I started taking horses over logs in the forest and then moved on to bigger jumps in a paddock.
The point is — jumping isn’t actually that difficult. If you have a trainer to teach you how to do it, it’ll be even less so. That doesn’t mean a beginner can go on to Olympic-size jumps right away, but it means you can start doing cavalettes, etc, as soon as you feel comfortable with your horse.
What’s more important is:
If you’re only interested in the jumping I’m afraid you’re in this game for the wrong reasons. To have a good experience jumping, and to do it correctly, you need to have a GOOD and thick foundation of dressage . Dressage is the foundation upon which you must later build the jumping. If you can’t control your horse and bring it out of a trot to a gallop to a walk to a halt to a gallop, and do it smoothly and completely in control, you’re not going to have fun. Of course anyone can take their horse over logs in the forest — providing you’re actually comfortable with galloping along in a forest – but taking a horse over a jump in an arena, doing it smoothly and beautifully enough to do it in a competition, is fairly difficult.
I’d say don’t try anything until you’re completely and utterly comfortable with your horse – depending on how much you ride that could take anywhere between a month and a year.
Good luck and remember, the most important part is to enjoy yourself!
