Breeding horses for a living?
Can one truly make a living breeding horses? I don’t mean just any old horses, but top of the line? I work for my trainer, and he trains andalusian and friesian stallions high level dressage. Of course, the owners of these horses offer their semen for sale. Some of the owners even have broodmares and will breed their stallions with them.
My trainer has also competed with these stallions and has placed highly. (He will be at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky with some of the stallions) just to give you an idea what kind of shows he is competing in.
So placing well will obviously rack up the worth of these horses, right?
So can one truly make a good living breeding horses with good bloodlines? I wonder how much business these owners really get?
You can always buy cheaper than you can breed.
How much are the owners paying to have them trained at the barn? Times that for the year. Add shoeing and vets bills, shows travel and so on and then find out how much the stud fee is and how many services are sold in the year. Doubt that the selling pays.
Breed to a mare you own and you keep the mare for a year. Say you get a live healthy foal, you have to grow that for two, three or four years. Count up the cost plus your time and work out how much you would need to sell it for to cover your costs.
Yes, some young horses sell for megga money for the dressage or jumping world but, they are usually from proven breeding stock, the mare has won a lot prior to going to stud or has produced youngsters that are doing exceptionally well, and the stallion is producing world class competition stock.
Horses that are still proving themselves will get mares but normally nothig spectacular until his stock is proven.
