Does anyone else think H&R Block is a scam?
My fiance and I went in last night (at 9 PM mind you – OMG) to file our taxes… he went first and did his thing and they slapped him up with a 74.00 fee for them doing his taxes, then tried to con him into doing a 1-2 day return for an additional (psh – idk what it even was) fee. Luckily i was there to tell them NO go with Direct Deposit which was free. I did mine after (and I’ve been going to H&R for 5 years now and never had a problem) get mine done and BAM, they hit me with a 150 dollar fee and numerous other ones… and I took Direct Deposit as well!! Then to top it off they guy yelled at me because I didnt make enough wages this year to balance out what I made last year (I was on disability most of 2008) WTF?
My parents said they tacked on an additional 75 bucks for me because I claimed my 4 year old… seriously? wtf is wrong here? I never had that problem before?

Okay, if they are scamming you, this is seriously wrong. Did you find out the fees before you went in? I think that they charge according to how many lines they have to fill out or something like that.
I have been going to the same H&R for 20 years. Yes, it is expensive, but have you had your taxes filed anywhere cheaper? I am not good at forms or stuff like this, and the last time I tried to do my own I was slapped with a $400 fee the following year because I did it wrong. So I feel like I have to go with a service. They know all the up to date stuff, too. We have some stocks, and I am so totally blank on how to fill out that stuff. I am afraid to NOT have Block do it; I don’t want to get hit with another fee for something I did wrong.

A $74 fee for any individual tax return is not bad! The average price for an individual 1040 is over $140, per the National Assoc of Tax Professionals. I do however commend you on staying away from the 1-2 day refund loan! Those are ridiculously priced!
