horse tack lockers
Should I use these bits on this horse?

I have a spare hunter dee bit and a spare Full cheek bit in my tack locker. I bought two new bridles yesterday and decided to attach these bits because they are in such good condition.
I Train horses and someone sent me their 5 yr. old Quarter Horse. She’s shaped like warmblood if that makes any difference. She is also very, very inexperienced. I just want to know if I could use these bits on her. Her owner rides english and wants to do pleasure riding, and a bit of show jumping.
I would also like to know if these Bits are all purpose bits. I want to be able to use them for all kinds of riding. Are these bits all purpose of do they have just one sole purpose?

thanks a ton…no a billion…no a trillion!
xoxo, Jammi

First, the bit has to be measured, and the horse’s mouth has to be measured. the bit width should be 1/4 to 1/2 inch wider than the width of the horse’s mouth, or it can’t be used.
You haven’t described the mouthpieces of the bits, which are important to consider. a copper smooth double jointed mouthpiece is a very different thing from a twisted wire single jointed mouthpiece. The D ring and full cheek snaffles are both good cheeks for all around snaffle bits….and with the right mouthpiece can be used on different horses. But, you should include the type of mouth in your question, and remember that bits are not one size fits all.
One thing to always remember when using a jointed mouth bit is that they are designed to be used with only one rein engaged at a time. If both reins are engaged together, the mouthpiece can have a nutcracker effect, pinch, and even contact the roof of the mouth in a horse with a shallow palate. If the rider’s hands are not trained on how to properly use a jointed snaffle, bit resistance will develop as the horse attempts to escape the pain inflicted by the engagement of both reins being used together.
I start young horses in a bosal, then use a rubber bar colt bit, and don’t use a jointed snaffle until the horse is proficient at responding to leg and seat cues for tempo, stops, and some basic lateral work. Used correctly, the full cheek snaffle is excellent for training advanced lateral movements.
