I’m going to my first Auction easter weekend, does anybody have any advice for me?
I’m going to my first horse acution easter weekend, its not a kill pen auction, its just basically a horse and tack consignment sale. I have alot of experience with horses, and I’m bringing along my friend who is very experienced and has been to a few auctions herself. But what tips would you give me about going, and what to look for in a good horse, and what to avoid. Also, for tack what should I look for, and how can I tell if the saddle is internally damaged?

I would have an absolutely clear idea of what you are looking for in a horse, and make a promise to yourself to not deviate from that. It is so easy to impulse buy… especially when horses are going so cheap. Be really careful of pushy sellers trying to advertise their horse before the auction. Really evaluate a horse’s conformation, temperment, and health before bidding. And as mentioned already, many horses are drugged before auctions. It might be helpful to bring along a height measuring tape to measure horse’s yourself because people so often either don’t know or lie about a horse’s height.
The horse market is a buyers market, so do not get discouraged if you don’t find the perfect horse at the auction. Now is not the time to compromise on what you want in a horse.
