How much is this horse really worth? Overpriced?
I have been wanting to lease a horse but have decided that since i would already be paying the full board that i might as well just buy the horse. I was just wondering if the ranch has her overpriced? She is a 7 year old paint mare that isn’t fully trained but has been used for ranch riding the past few years, and they are selling her as a pole bending prospect. She is very speedy and is very promising with the right training. She is priced at $3500. Does this price sound about right, or too much?

Well pricing all depends on really if the horse is registered, and really if the owner knows you will pay money for it it is worth anything the buyer is willing to pay because if she thinks you got money she will milk it. Now remember just because you are able to pay the board on the horse doesnt mean you are obligated to buy “that” one. You know yourself you can afford it and you enjoy it so you can go look at any horse and buy it not just that one, now on the other hand if you like that horse and you could picture yourself with it that think harder about it. Maybe you should lease her for the month or two to see what the horse is about. Now i have barrel horses and have bought and sold many so from what you are saying……if she is registered and stright and promising than i would say she could be worth it. I myself would pay no more than $3000 though. But i buy,sell, breed all the time, you are looking for a good companion that you will keep for years. Being seven years old might take a little bit longer to train her for barrels because a young horse is so willing to learn and please where as a seven year old she has reached her maturity, doesnt mean she cant do it by no means though. But make sure thats what you want to do with the horse. But bottom line is there are many great horses out there keep your eyes open and it wouldnt hurt to go look at some horses that are for sale in your area and see what you think. If it were me and i was thinking about purchasing this horse your talking about I would talk her down a little bit offer her 3000 and see what she says if she doesnt budge than play hard to get for a while sit on it and let the owner think. Chances are if she doesnt budge it means she truely thinks the horse it worth it. You can buy a really nice horse for $3000-$4000 for all diciplines, good luck and let me know what you do
