horse riding kona
What is there to do in Hilo and Kona?

I wanted to give you a little bit of a back ground on me so you can give me ideas on what i would like to do…..So i like 4×4 ing riding 4 wheelers i like to party some. im going to be on vacation so i want to have fun i like kind of like doing extreme things i surf in cali but im really not that interested in doing it in hawaii. I dont know what else i like horses but if you could include like url’s to go to so i can look at the site that would be great thank you so much :)

* Walking out to view the active volcano, the lava is flowing all the way to the sea. South of Hilo, go past Pahoa. About a 1-2 mile walk over lava fields. If you go at night, the lava glows orange-red. Bring a flashlight, no electricity. And DEFINITELY bring repellent, after a rain there are a million mosquitoes.

* Do a night-dive off the Keauhou Bay Sheraton to swim with the manta rays. The island is very new and there is little coral reefs yet, so deep-sea animals come right to shore. Fair Wind has a guide and provide all the equipment.

* Near Parker ranch (the largest US cattle ranch!) north of Kohala is horse country. There are a lot of stables you can rent a horse.

* You can hike up a live volcano, either Mauna Kea (higher, and the tallest mountain in the world, even higher than Mt. Everest measured from its base under the ocean) or Mauna Loa (the largest volcano in the world).

* For something more tame, you can take the Fair Wind catamaran cruise to Kealakekua Bay for great snorkeling or diving. Along the way, because again there is little coral you have a good chance of seeing flying fish and spinner dolphins playing in the boat wake.

* They have started up zip line tours on the Big Island. I don’t know anyone that has taken them yet, but there are competing companies now here (originally, it was just Maui). This is where you go with a group and hike up a mountain, sometimes through the rain forest, and then jump off a cliff tethered to a line. They start you off easier, then as you gain confidence and technique they become more difficult and higher. Here are a couple of links, but again I don’t know anyone that has taken these tours yet:

* There is a irrigation ditch tour north of Kailua-Kona that has always been a favorite. It was damaged during the earthquake a few years back, so check to see if operational (was supposed to be this year).
