What is needed to become a horse riding teacher in the USA?

I come from England, where most trainers have their BHS certification. I have no certification. I taught beginners in South Africa where things are very casual and would love to do the same again. I now live in California. What do people expect from trainers here? I would be teaching children who have never ridden over the summer holidays on a casual basis. We have a liability cover etc. I know many people who teach here uncertified, but what is the ‘standard’ when it comes to looking for a certified trainer?

Thanks!

Unfortunately there is no mandatory certification for teachers in the US. So, basically, anyone who knows one end of a horse from the other (and some who don’t) can call themselves a riding instructor. If you already have liability insurance, you really already have what is required.

Many instructors here do get a voluntary certification, but there are many to choose from since there is no universal standard. Which one you might get depends on your area of interest. USDF and USEA have their own certification programs. I know there is an American Riding Instructors Association that has a certification program. Also, BHS certifications are often recognized in the US. Because there are so many voluntary certification, I don’t really think there is a ‘standard.’
