I have a ? about Self Employment and taxes?
I just started a new job at a horse farm taking care of the 13 horses and cleaning out stalls. The owners are paying me per hour and are giving me a 1099 at the end of the year. So my wuestion is what reciepts do I need to keep to claim on my taxes? I have never had a job before where no taxes are being with held out of m check. So I am unsure what I can claim…. ect…. gas ( I drive 25 miles a day to work), riding clothes, helmet, boots ect… I dont know if where I live makes a difference but I am in Tennessee. In years past I have always done my taxes online so I have never been to an actual tax accountant. Thanks for any help anyone can give.
I work directly for the owners. Their are no boarders at the farm and they are paying me as an independent contractor and the are not with holding any taxes.

How nice of your new bosses. You call it a job, they call it an assignment.
They call it a contract to clean the stalls, then hand you their shovel and pay you by the hour.
If you get sick, are you required to pay for a substitute to come do the work?
Let’s see. If you get sick, they won’t pay you sick leave. If you are laid off, you can’t get unemployment. If you get hurt, you can’t file for worker’s comp. And when you file your taxes, you pay not only the employee share fo fica/mc, but the employer’s share as well.
As for expenses. What make the riding clothes riding clothes? You can’t buy a normal pair of pants and designate them riding wear and claim a deduction.
