Is there such thing as a “true” self-taught equestrian?
I’ve briefly heard of people teaching themselves to ride. Is that truly possible? If so, how would I manage teaching myself to jump? I already know all the basics, but I’ve never actually jumped a horse. I’m getting help in training my mare to jump, but I need to learn how to jump myself! I was planning on spending a LONG time studying jumping videos and going to my friend’s hunter/jumper lessons and researching jumping… but that may not be enough. I was also planning on video-taping/taking pictures of myself jump, and comparing it to pictures/videos of other jumpers. Does that sound like it would be possible? (I cant take jumping lessons…. its a REALLY long story and too hard to explain).
UPDATE: I have recently found a barn nearby that will teach me how to jump and I will be boarding my horse there, however I will be mostly responsible for teaching her how to jump. Any tips on THAT now? =)
Why not do that? That’s how I figured it out.
When I learned to ride, my aunt and my cousin taught me. I grew up doing sporting/western type stuff and trail riding. I figured out jumping just by watching it on tv and what not since neither my cousin or aunt jumped and my parents couldn’t pay for lessons.
If you’re not comfortable in doing it totally by yourself, get your friend to help you out and give you some pointers that she’s getting in her lessons or have someone come out to watch you if, god forbid, something happened. *touch wood*!!
