Opinions on taking ONE year off after i graduate high school to establish reputation in horse industry?
I have been thinking lately that i might want to take ONE year off after i graduate to establish myself in the equestrian industry. I have been riding and showing hunter and jumper for about ten years and not to brag… but im pretty good. I want to ride Grand Prix specifically in eventing and show-jumping and train, breed, and sell warmbloods on my own farm… i know these are huge goals. In my one year off I’ve been thinking that i might want to travel around the US with my horse to compete in big shows and become more well known. Another idea i’ve been toying with is traveling to Germany for a year to get connections with big breeding/showing farms and possibly showing overseas. Not that I’m putting off college, im actually extremely motivated to go to school… i’m just thinking about what might be best for my future career. Does anyone have an opinion or suggestion to my ideas?
I believe that to make it in the horse world, you must be quite talented and dedicated, especially if you don’t have gobbles of money. I drempt of doing the same thing (postponing college to persue my dreams of competing at Badmitten), but I realized that I couldn’t make it on my one horse, let alone the huge financial committment that it would take.
Many people will work as a working student for a well-known trainer/competitor. It’s one of the best ways to get into the industry. But, it’s competitive just to become a working student for big-time competitors.
I hope that you’re able to fulfill your dreams better than I did.
