Do equestrians use the word menage or manège?
Three times on TV this week I have noticed people using the word “menage” when they are talking about equestrian facilities. Surely this should be manège? I live in France, and this word is the correct word, seeing as it refers to a circular ring around which horses are exercised. The word “menage” is related to the household. Is this a common mistake, or is it simply TV presenters being slack? Which word is generally used by people in the equestrian business in the UK?
Good grief! Yahoo suggested the gay, lesbian and transgendered section for this question! The mind boggles!
Haven’t heard from you for ages Pampers. As usual Pampers old scout you are correct, I have heard them say ménage although it was some time ago. Simon Richardson or Mike Tucker could have been planning something with Pat Smythe or her horse into a ménage a’ trois. Personally after seeing Pat Smythe many years ago I would have preferred her horse. Gay and lesbian ? they must have picked up on the ménage or at least hoping unless of course they don’t know what manège is either.
