My parents think that equestrian is the easiest sport ever, and that all you do is sit there and kick, how do i change there minds. They think its not even a sport. It really hurts me when i try so hard, to be good at hunters and they think its a piece of cake. How can i let them know its hard.

It seems as if you and your parents need a little help with your essential relationship! It would be interesting to know what is behind their disdainful attitude – do they resent the cost of your lessons? the time they spend driving you to and from the stable? are they jealous of your passion for horses? (Yes, parents can feel sidelined when their kids develop strong interests outside the family, whether it’s an activity like riding or a new person in your life!) Perhaps you could open up a conversation (not a quarrel) with them by asking something like, “What to you makes something a “real” sport? How important is obvious effort in the sports you do like?” and really *listen* to what they have to say! If they are not horse people (sounds like they aren’t), they may not be aware that an important part of riding is to *conceal* how much effort goes into it, especially in the Hunter discipline in which the horse-rider combination must appear to simply glide around the course as cool as two cucumbers!
You sound frustrated that they don’t value your chosen sport, but how essential is it, really, that they do? If they are reluctant to go on financing your lessons, etc., then it may be important to get them on side, perhaps by arranging for your instructor to chat with them and point out the skills and effort involved, and how much you are accomplishing. But if they are just needling you (for whatever reason), perhaps you just smile and let it wash over you. You know how hard you work, and so does your instructor (and your horse!) – that’s what counts!
