Help With Horse Situation?
So I would say that my family and I are in the middle money class system. Well, how would I be able to do the sport of Equestrian without my family and/ or I going bankrupt? Also, I am 14 and live in Lake County, Indiana if you can find me some farms that will give lessons for work. Another thing, how can I make money to pay for the stuff myself? Thanks again!
Well, prices for upkeep, lessons, etc are very dependant on where you live. Indiana, I’d assume would be far cheaper than out here (Southern California). I bought my horse at 8y/o, in 2004 for $2400. He was an ex-racer, and that included a month’s worth of re-training, whereas we could have bought him for about $2200 with no re-training (though if you know anything about off-the-track-Thoroughbreds, you’ll know some re-training is very much appreciated lol).
Anywho, he’s a low-maitenance horse, only needs front shoes, eats your basic alfalfa with the regular suppliments like psyillium, de-wormer, etc. when they’re due. I got a nearly new English saddle set (girth, irons, leathers, and pad included) for about $500, a bridle set for $30, brushes, etc. were collectively around $40. Board ranges from $200-300 a month depending on what he’s due for (such as shoeing, deworming, etc). I also keep him out in a dirt pasture with about 10 other horses though, so for this area, I’m paying the lowest amount, whereas a private pen would raise the price by at least $50, and a barn stall by at least $100.
However the lady I board him with has allowed myself and other girls to work some of the board money off by cleaning the ranch, helping feed, etc., and working other horses.
I’d say start going barn to barn and try working for riding first. See if the owner will teach you. Or maybe someone is looking to lease their horse out. You could try out “owning” a horse, without actually owning it. You’d get to ride it, take basic care of it, etc. and you’d probably pay at least half of the board, if not all (depending on the person and the situation). That way you could try it out, and decide if you can handle the responsability, financially, and physically.
Then maybe later down the road the barn you’re working for, or the person you’re leasing from or whichever, might know a horse or two for sale. Then you’d have their professional help and opinions aiding you in the purchase of your horse, and you’d have a reliable and friendly place to go to for advice, board, lessons, and whatever else
