Can anyone give me any tips for equestrian photography?

Hi,
I am currently a Photography student and have been asked to accompany a photography this weekend,
I usually photograph mainly portraits and documentary style photographs.
Although I am going to photograph at a horse show.

Does any one have any tips or suggestions to take good photographs?

Thank you very much in advance!
:)

Set up in one position since the riders for any given competition will be following the same path. If there’s more than one type of event or competition, then move to the appropriate place for that different event. If you watch one round in a series of riders you’ll see the pattern and what might make an exciting shot.

Use a tripod and point your camera at the spot that will show a “decisive moment” (top of a jump, particularly difficult side stepping, etc.) in the event.

Use a long lens.

Use a fast shutter speed.

Take a notebook and record the rider’s number (if it’s a competition) and your shot number as you go. If the shots come out great they may want to purchase a copy.

Try to avoid shooting them in shade – there will be enough contrast challenges with the dark horses, riders in dark and light equestrian togs and horse & rider against contrasty light sky.

You can often get riders to stop with their horses and pose for you when they aren’t in an event or back by their trailers or stalls – that way you can get more portrait style close-ups or ‘candids’.

Good luck!
