I own horse stables and want to advertise…there is this new directory…?
they print the directory (its like a equestrian phonebook) every three months and want to charge me a flat fee for for each of the three months my ad would be listed… they don’t get shipped to every door, they are located in coffee shops and major grocery stores etc… how do i know that people will pick it up and keep it for 3 months…? But it is the only “horse” phone book in my town…
You don’t know that it will be used at all, but that is the nature of advertising. If it works, you do it again. If it doesn’t work–well, that was an expensive lesson!
The same thing is true of television advertising. How can you be certain anyone will really watch your commercial? If they watch, how can you know that they’ll remember the name of your product? If they remember the name of your product, will they think it good or bad?
With advertising–you just have to try several means of getting the word out that your product is good (or better) or the best available.
This is why Madison Avenue (the big advertising agencies) can command so much money!
