How do you get enough experience to work on a horse ranch?

I attended Meredith Manor International Equestrian Centre and also worked for the lipizzan stallions…I really really want to work for a cutting or reining trainer…but everyone says they want someone with more experience. How in the heck is someone supposed to get experience if no one will hire them because they don’t have experience? I know I’m a really good rider I’ve had tons of people tell me..I’ve rode reiners and high level dressage horses..Please someone give me some answers its gettting extremely frustrating! I did not pay over $20,000 to go to MMIEC for trainers to tell me I don’t know what I’m doing!
The school was nothing but hands on experience….you can’t learn horses no other way..

Try to improve the way you present yourself in an interview. Employers telling you that you need more experience could mean many different things. Research the employer you will be interviewing with prior to your interview and adjust the way you present yourself and your methods and philosophies to coincide with his or her training methods and philosophies.

Many college equine programs have very little hands-on time, and employers not familiar with Meredith Manor may not realize the amount of time in the saddle MM students receive. Use the portfolio you developed in your MM teaching classes (and hopefully have been updating since graduation), your MM log books, past work experiences, etc. to provide documentation of the amount of experience you do have.

Also, utilize all available resources. Stay active on the equine job listing sites, check MM’s online job book on a regular basis, etc. Try to make as many connections in the industry as possible. And don’t limit yourself to a small geographical location. If you are willing to relocate, the amount of job openings available will increase exponentially. MM’s graduates have a 90% job placement rate and many have a limited amount of experience prior to MM so jobs are out there – it just may take some hard work to find the right one. Good luck in your hunting!
