building a bridge for trail class practice?
my mare will be competing in several show classes for our high school’s equestrian team season, one of them being trail. at the barn i board at we’ve got a water hazard, trot poles, etc, but i’m worried about the bridge obstacle. how would i build one? the one used last year, which i think will be used again, for trail had ramps on both sides and was about 4 feet long and at least 3 feet wide. how could i make one? i’ve searched alll over the internet and couldn’t find instructions, so i’m desperate!
Lay 3 pressure treated 4×4 posts on the ground for the base. Put two of them as wide as you want the bride to be, the third one in the center. Use treated 2 x 12 for the planks, cut them 6 inches longer than the spacing of the 4×4 posts. lay the planking on the 4×4′s and use long screws, two per post, to screw them in. You may want to pre drill the holes first. Put two screws in per post. Cover the 4×4′s with the planking and you will have a bridge!
You can attach a large hook and eye to one side of the center 4×4′s to drag it around with a chain.
Make sure you use pressure treated wood so it won’t rot in the rain, and use 2 inch planking for strength. You don’t need side rails.
